One year after its official launch of the 3rd generation mobile network (3G), Viettel’s total 3G stations on air has doubled, from 8,000 to over 17,000 stations, earning Viettel the owner of the largest 3G network in South East Asia.

The result has exceeded Viettel’s committed amount of 15,000 stations to the Ministry of Information and Communications after 3 year of service deployment in the application. Right upon the launch in March 2010, Viettel’s total 3G stations already 1.5 times higher than its commitment.

With 3G stations accounting for 65% of 2G station amount (or even 80% in large cities and provinces), Viettel’s strategy to introduce wireless broadband Internet to users via 3G USB (3G Dcom) has been realized.

The statistics of average usage traffic of Dcom 3G which is found to be equivalent to 60% that of ADSL, demonstrates that customer’s habit of accessing wireless broadband Internet is gradually shaped. This trend is more obvious early this year when 3G Dcom traffic reported 30% year on year increase. When available, Internet access via 3G is even higher than ADSL. For instance, during Vietnam’s Luna New Year 2011, subscribers who joined the program “Enjoy New Year with Dcom 3G” used averaged 5.3 GB in 15 days – 1.5 times higher than ADSL.

Viettel’s large and wide network has offered people an opportunity to access the world of information for people in rural and remote areas, where Internet ADSL deployment is challenging. Network statistics show that average traffic of 3G Dcom subscriber in rural areas is even 10% higher than that in urban. This reveals a huge demand by people in those areas for Internet access.

High quality and data traffic rate offered 3G network an advantage to create a new trend for users using digital content service. Viettel’s 3G subscribers consumption level is 45% higher than that of 2G subscribers. In which, proportion of value added services (VAS) and data traffic by 3G subscribers is 3.5 times higher than that of 3G unregistered users. Currently, Viettel is the provider of at most basic and value added services, amounting to 18 services. The most attractive 3G services include Mobile TV, Imuzik 3G, Pixshare and Yahoo Chat.
